President's Page

I’m very excited to be stepping into the role of CAHSLA President for 2011-2012. For those of you who may not know me, I’ve been at The Christ Hospital on and off for the past ten years and was promoted to the Electronic Resources Librarian position after finishing my Library Science degree from the University of Kentucky. Regina Hartman, the Library Manager at Christ, has always encouraged us to be CAHSLA members and I’m really glad I’ve taken a more active role in the past couple of years – moving from Secretary to Vice-President, and now President.

I’m having a hard time resisting using a perhaps overused, but appropriate, literary quote: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, …” I think we’re all well-aware of why the “worst of times” is applicable in this age of funding and staffing issues that have hit libraries particularly hard, so I’m going to focus on the “best of times.”

We’ve already had an excellent membership meeting in late September organized by our Program Planning Committee. This year, in lieu of an individual to fill the Vice-President position, several CAHSLA members have stepped up to fill the role of Program Planning Chair/Committee: Brigid Almaguer, Regina Hartman, Amy Koshoffer, Val Purvis, and Edith Starbuck. Whenever I’m giving my CAHSLA “elevator speech” to a prospective new member, I always mention the strong camaraderie between the members, and I think the fact that there is always someone willing to step up and fill a void – regardless of their busy work and personal schedules – is a testimony to that fact.

In addition to the rest of the programming year, we’ve also decided to continue the CAHSLA TechConvo (formerly COCLS) meetings. The TechConvo is one of my favorite perks of CAHSLA membership – look for my write-up of the upcoming meeting below. Another big selling point of my CAHSLA marketing pitch is the fact that this group has been following and incorporating emerging technologies in their library work for over three decades! I’m a huge advocate of using technology to make information access for library patrons as seamless as possible, and I hope the TechConvo meetings will continue to be a springboard for ideas to accomplish that goal and more.

I’m looking forward to another year of CAHSLA events, and I hope to see everyone at the holiday gathering this winter!

Our program began with a tour of Xavier University’s newly constructed, renovated, and reorganized Conaton Learning Commons. Amy Ensor, Director for Content Management, was our guide. We were all impressed by the new surroundings including furniture, carpeting, a digital media center, group study areas, computer resources, reference desks and meeting spaces.

We had our dinner brought in from Aynies Deli by past president Regina Hartman. Incoming president, Emily Kean, commenced our business meeting at 6:30PM. The agenda consisted of reports from the Program Committee (Val Purvis, Brigid Almaguer, Edith Starbuck, Regina Hartman, and Amy Koshoffer) and Treasurer, Cathy Constance. We talked about Spring Grove Cemetery as a future meeting venue as well as the newly reopening Sign Museum. Membership dues for 2011/2012 were given to the treasurer.

Barb Slavinski opened the general discussion with a question about members experience with adding a library link to the EPIC form which could provide a resource for point-of-care information to patients about their various diagnoses. Val Purvis asked the group about their use of ILL eforms. And we eventually began talking about marketing hospital libraries, etc… as we watched a dark storm roll in from the giant windows in our meeting room. The meeting was swiftly adjourned and hopefully everyone made it to their cars before the rain deluge.

The CAHSLA TechConvo group (formerly COCLS) is an opportunity for CAHSLA members to meet informally to discuss emerging library technologies. CAHSLA TechConvo also has a wiki space to share and add to our meeting notes. Sharon Purtee and Edith Starbuck from UC’s Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library will be present to discuss their paper presentation from Midwest MLA about managing journals by committee. Other topics for discussion might include: monitoring usage of online journals; using e-metrics/online journal usage to make addition/deletion decisions; navigating print versus online subscription decisions; managing online journal activation, maintenance, access issues; cost-per-use analysis, etc. Hope to see you there!

OHSLA Fall Meeting: “Information Anywhere”

The OHSLA Fall Meeting was held at the Kent State University Libraries on October 24, 2011. Max Anderson, GMR Technology Coordinator taught “Information Anywhere”, a four-hour class on mobile devices for 4 MLA Continuing Education credits. This well-attended class was an overview of mobile devices; what’s out there, who’s using them, how are they using them, how are we as individuals using them and specifically how our library users using them?

The potential for mobile devices in the medical field are numerous and physicians who own smartphones or iPads continue to increase. Potential uses include communication and disease management with patients, transmission of patient information, and access to patient histories at the point-of-care, plus much more. Max also talked about existing applications in the areas of clinical, research and library, and productivity. Among those featured were the NLM Mobile Applications at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mobile.

Attendees learned what is involved with creating mobile applications and websites and were given the opportunity to create a simple mobile website. We were encouraged as well to think about where our libraries fit into this growing mobile world and what we can do for our library users.

The class was very informative and thought-provoking. Max Anderson provided an excellent overview of mobile devices, existing applications, potential developments, and ways that libraries can embrace and support mobile

information and access.

Electronic Collection Development Planning

The objectives of the course included helping us to assess our need for electronic materials, revise a collection development policy that includes e-resources, review issues involving negotiating and licensing, discuss technological issues related to access and discuss future trends in electronic collection development.

There are many good reasons to develop an electronic vs a print collection. Libraries can do away with broken copiers, a single copy of a book checked out, a section torn from a library book, access to materials after closing time.

An assessment must be made to define our users and their information needs. The organization’s tolerance for risk, the technical support and the capabilities of the staff must be accounted for. An evaluation of the current collection must also be made.

Advantages to an electronic collection include 24/7 access, simultaneous access, quick turn-around, no physical management of print, e-pub ahead of print, audio/video options, full-text searching of content, no claiming. Disadvantages include set up, renewals & loss of access, missed issues, training users, changed interfaces, single vs aggregate, ip address changes, vendors vs aggregators, higher cost.

Policies for collection development must be made in a formal statement that allows for professional judgment. The policy will set standards, form a framework for collection assessment, define staff accountability, provide a buffer against complaints, provide consistency over time.

Aggregators are typically not publishers but publishers are becoming their own aggregators. Examples of aggregators are EBSCO, ProQuest, Ovid, Ingenta, OCLC First Search. Aggregators of full-text often include database access (Cinahl) and direct linkage makes it easier for patrons to use. Often they provide a large number of titles and often at a lower cost. Disadvantages include less control of the collection by the library, ILLs may not be allowed by the provider, embargos can limit the most current materials, quality can be grainy or blurry. The true cost of the package can be tricky to determine.

Purchasing directly from the publisher also has advantages and disadvantages. Costs can be better negotiated, back files can be included, embargos are less likely, additional content can be provided. However, dealing with individual publishers is time consuming and pricing can vary depending on your negotiating skills. Often, universities have more power to negotiate than hospitals.

Working within a consortium can save money but can create its own set of challenges. The members should have similar needs, someone must find potential members, signing a contract for multiple institutions can be complicated, diversity is reduced, someone must provide administrative functions such as billing and implementation. Some publishers refuse to cooperate with a consortium.

Various providers of online articles were discussed such as Biomed Central, PubMed Central, and others such as Access Medicine, MD Consult.

Electronic Book Aggregators and their platforms, features, advantages and disadvantages were considered. There is usually an annual platform charge and it is often based on the number of concurrent users. A special viewer might be required. Companies we are familiar with included StatRef, R2, and Books@Ovid. Negotiating license agreements should include a definition of the product as well as the responsibilities of both parties, what changes can be made. Your institution’s legal department must review the license before signing.

License agreements / contracts were discussed and a couple of “nevers” were mentioned. Never agree to the laws of other states. Never agree to mandatory or binding arbitration. Desirable clauses include the provision of COUNTER compliant statistics, perpetual access, archival access, and remote or off-site access.

Link Resolvers, a software that works to make connecting to electronic collections smoother by transmitting data through hypertext links, can cross platforms and connect various vendors. SFX (the first one), Serials Solutions, World Cat, Link Source from EBSCO, TDNet, Godot, UMLAUT and Link Solver from Ovid were discussed. There are clearly many vendors and many factors to consider. An evidence–based approach is best.

QR Codes

Conglomerate of Poster Session and Presented Paper

QR Codes, or Quick Response Codes, generated a lot of interest at the conference. The data imbedded in the QR Code contains data that can be captured from a smartphone or similar device. The phone needs an app and the app can be loaded for free. Creating the code can also be done for free. A number of websites are available for both the app and for making your own QR codes.

QR Codes contain any variety of information. It may contain a sound bite describing artwork or it may provide directions for how to use the copier, or even allow access to an e-book owned by the library.

Conventional bar codes can store about 20 digits (or bits) of information whereas QR Codes handle about 8,000 digits. This increased capacity allows QR Codes to provide more content from textual to audiovisual.

The Ohio State Univ. HSL developed a plan to promote patron’s use of QR Codes after they placed the codes on book covers to alert users. They continue to track usage of this innovative technology. Tracking software is not typically found for free.

Amazon: Retailer, tech company … and library?

According to an article in the Seattle Business Courier by Aislyn Greene on 11/3/2011 when Amazon’s Kindle Fire is released November 15, “users will be able to borrow book for free through Amazon's new digital library. Amazon.com has launched a Kindle lending library that lets Amazon Prime members with any Kindle device, including the upcoming Fire, borrow books from the retailer.” Amazon announced that there will be 5,000 titles to start. CEO Jeff Bezos, in a press release, stated “Prime Members now have exclusive access to a huge library of books to read on any Kindle device at no additional cost and with no due dates.” Customers will be limited to “checking out” one book at a time using a Kindle app. This app will only be available on Kindle devices and no other type of ereaders will be able to provide this exclusive Amazon app. Amazon Prime Members pay a $79 per year membership fee.

According to a Wall Street Journal article, the six largest U.S. publishers have refused to participate in Amazon’s lending library venture citing fears that the program would harm book sales.

In another recent development, Amazon recently launched a program that lets Kindle readers borrow titles from their local public libraries.

On September 2, 2011, Cecil and Emily Rahe celebrated their 60^th (diamond) wedding anniversary with "dinner out" for two. They received many cards, emails and phone calls from family and friends near and far. Cecil and Emily are busy in many community volunteer activities, and we are grateful that they have remained such a vital part of CAHSLA. We congratulate you, Emily and Cecil, on this amazing milestone and wish you much happiness in the years to come.

Kristen Burgess, MSLS, is completing the second year of a National Library of Medicine (NLM) Associate Fellowship at the University of Cincinnati (UC) Health Sciences Library. The Associate Fellowship Program is a one-year postgraduate training program at the NLM with an optional second year. Kristen will focus on two primary areas during this year at UC: instruction and instructional design and the management and curation of e-only health sciences collections. Kristen's projects while at NLM include researching and planning recommendations for clinical coding system changes expected for MedlinePlus Connect, data analysis for the U. S National Resource Description and Access (RDA) Test, and legislative tracking. Kristen received her MSLS from the University of North Texas. She and her husband moved to Cincinnati from Atlanta, GA and are excited to explore the Midwest!

Emily Kean, MSLS, Electronic Resources Librarian at the James N. Gamble Library (TCH) is a co-author on a study recently published in the Journal of the Medical Library Association (JMLA), “Outreach impact study: the case of the Greater Midwest Region” (J Med Libr Assoc. 2011 Oct;99(4):297-303. PMID: 22022223). Emily and co-authors presented a poster on the study in Minneapolis at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the Medical Library Association. “Objective: This project's goal is to engage library and information science (LIS) students in an outreach impact study. Students are conducting the study to determine the impact that National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Greater Midwest Region (NN/LM GMR), funding has on the ability of members to perform outreach on behalf of NN/LM. This project resulted from a subcontract from NN/LM GMR to the University of Kentucky School of LIS.

Lisa McCormick, MSLS, Library Manager at The Jewish Hospital was recently named the 2011 Excellence in Mission Award winner for Mercy Health Southwest Ohio Region (SWO). “The Excellence in Mission Award is intended to recognize one person from each region whose performance in their work is a particularly evident reflection of the mission. The recipient of the CHP (Catholic Health Partners) Excellence in Mission Award is chosen from among seven regional honorees, each of whom has been selected by his or her colleagues.” Alas, Lisa did not receive the CHP award. At the awards ceremony, however, in the introductions, she was described as being the manager of a “critical asset” – the library - to Jewish Hospital’s research and GME programs. As a follow-up to the Excellence in Mission Award, Lisa will be described in an employee engagement campaign. The following is the copy for the campaign: "Although Lisa McCormick does not prescribe medications or perform surgeries, her job in the Health Science Library is just as important as those on the front lines of health care; behind every request for research and data, Lisa knows there is a patient and family in need. As a participant in Leadership Rounds, Lisa has the privilege of checking on patients in the Cardiovascular Unit. Seeing the twinkle in the eye of the patient whose health is improving, because of research she provided a physician gives Lisa the satisfaction of knowing that she is a part of a bigger team that is providing the best possible care to all patients."

We extend a warm welcome to Tiffany Hammer who began working at the Edward L. Pratt Library of Children’s Hospital Medical Center in July as a Library Assistant. She previously worked at the Oxford Lane Library and the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. Melida Busch, Director of the Pratt Library writes: “Though born in Honolulu, Tiffany is a long-time Cincinnatian. She received her Master’s in Library and Information Science from Kent State University in 2008. Tiffany shares her newly purchased home with her two cats Ducky and Batman.”

“Dr. Google Will See You Now”

According to a recent survey conducted by Wolters Kluwer Health, about 46% of physicians frequently use search engines like Google and Yahoo to look up information on diagnoses and treatments. More than 300 physicians belonging to the American Medical Association participated in the survey.

Researchers asked physicians about how they obtained information for diagnosis and treatment and found that:

68% of respondents said they consult professional journals;
60% said they discuss the issues with colleagues;
46% said they use search engines like Google and Yahoo;
42% said they use conferences and events; and
42% said they use no-cost online services like WebMD.

“Just the facts, Ma’am” Library Theft Report in Blue Ash Police Blotter

Police reports can be the source of interesting information on our community and its residents. Recently, an online Blue Ash Community Press article highlighted the findings of reporter, Jeanne Houck in the article: From stabbed air conditioners to Armani thefts, Blue Ash police see it all. One report Houck discovered related to the theft of a library card. Houck writes, “A woman at UC Blue Ash College, until recently called Raymond Walters College, decided she needed someone with a badge when her library card from the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County went missing. The police report valued the card at $2, an amount sure to raise the ire of librarians who believe access to books is priceless.”

Pardon the Error

The number of retracted journal papers rose 15-fold in 10 years according to data compiled by the Wall Street Journal and Thomson Reuters. In 2010, as stated in the report, 339 retraction notices were published in research journals, representing a more than 15-fold increase from 2001, when only 22 notices were published. Some journals say the increase means publications have gotten better at detecting errors, helped in part by new software that can determine instances of plagiarism. However, others say journals are more willing to publish questionable findings because of competition between publications and between researchers. Wired Magazine's "Why Johnny Can't Search"

According to a recent article in Wired Magazine teachers in the mid-1950’s asked the questions, “Why can’t Johnny read?” Today’s teacher is asking “Why can’t Johnny search?” Clive Thompson, Wired Magazine, on November 11, reviewed some of the issues confronting educators in terms of the inability of students to critically evaluate the information they find online. Thompson summarized a recent study out of the College of Charleston that demonstrated that these ‘digital natives,’ when given a research task, go straight to Google and take the first “low hanging fruit” they are presented.

Thompson writes, “Who’s to blame? Not the students. If they’re naive at Googling, it’s because the ability to judge information is almost never taught in school. Under 2001’s No Child Left Behind Act, elementary and high schools focus on prepping their pupils for reading and math exams. And by the time kids get to college, professors assume they already have this skill. The buck stops nowhere. This situation is surpassingly ironic, because not only is intelligent search a key to everyday problem-solving, it also offers a golden opportunity to train kids in critical thinking.”

Thompson goes on to describe the efforts of library professionals to teach critical thinking skills for searching. “Consider the efforts of Frances Harris, librarian at the magnet University Laboratory High School in Urbana, Illinois. (Librarians are our national leaders in this fight; they’re the main ones trying to teach search skills to kids today.)”

Though his conclusions are not new, they remind us of the importance of continuing to offer students a range of instruction (from beginning to refresher) on identifying credible information on the web. President’s Page

It has been a busy and productive CAHSLA year! Typically, this final column of the president is an opportunity to review our accomplishments and thank all of those who developed and presented our programs. It is also the usual time to pass the gavel on to the new CAHSLA president. However, this year the gavel passing will be a bit different. I’ll get to that shortly.

My first priority is to thank the Executive Committee and the Program Committee for making my job so easy. Brigid Almaquer faithfully documented our meetings as Secretary. Cathy Constance tracked our expenses and provided an updated directory of members. Amy Koshoffer provided her wisdom on many occasions and conducted the election of new officers. Emily Kean and the Program Committee developed many quality meeting that offered opportunities to enhance our knowledge and stay connected with our colleagues. Amy and Emily have some exciting plans for revamping COCLS so that we have ongoing opportunities to review new technologies for our libraries. They will also be unveiling the CAHSLA Wiki very soon. Barbarie Hill, though retired, continues to support the organization, along with Lisa McCormick, by producing the CAHSLA Chronicle.

Faced with the realities of a smaller active membership, our members indicated their wish for the organization to continue despite the fact we could not offer a candidate for President Elect for this year’s election. Instead, as in 2006, we will have a program planning committee. The membership also supported an increase in our dues realizing that expenses have risen while the dues have remained the same for nearly a decade. Please see Amy Koshoffer’s election report elsewhere in the Chronicle.

I cannot end this column without expressing my delight in our end-of-the year picnic. The picnic, set in the beautiful Daniel Drake Park, is a reminder of what makes CAHSLA so special to all of us. It was a time to gather for conversation, enjoy some fabulous dishes prepared by members, and share a lot of laughter. It reminds me of family reunions where you only have the chance to see some members of the extended family one timer per year. Just like those reunions, even though time has intervened, you pick up the conversation just where it left off, as if no time had passed.

CAHSLA Business Meeting Minutes

Speaker & Dinner 6:00 - 6:30 p.m.

The speaker portion of the annual business meeting opened with a short video presentation by Mary Jenkins introducing us to her library. The Hamilton County Law Library is located downtown at Main and Central Parkway on the top floor. It serves county employees, the general public and users who pay to subscribe to its services. There are 1600, mostly lawyer and law firm, members. There are 7 staff members that provide library services from 7:30-4:30PM by phone (946-5300), email or in person. Mary said that we should feel free to call them for guidance if we have legal questions from our patrons. Examples of types of (health and medicine) subjects they deal with are living wills, medical malpractice, HIPAA, health care reform, expert witnesses, personal injury and products liability.

Business Meeting 6:30-7:15 p.m.

CAHSLA President, Regina Hartman, welcomed us to the business meeting and provided the delicious spaghetti dinner including Emily’s tossed salad, kale salad and dressing, bread and bakery cookies.

First on the agenda was “approval of minutes” from our last meeting in March which was the ProQuest training session by Edward Loera at Christ Hospital. Regina mentioned that Mr. Loera will return in August to discuss RefWorks if anyone is interested.

Next on the agenda, Cathy Constance, Treasurer, briefed us on the discussion about the CAHSLA checking and savings accounts. After some deliberation, we may choose to close the savings account due to escalating fees and maintain a checking account only. Emily Kean, Program Chair, discussed ideas for meetings next year as well as the increasing difficulty in finding new venues which are affordable. Brigid Almaguer offered Cincinnati State’s The Summit restaurant as a possibility if their student dinners coincide with CAHSLA meeting dates next year. Still coming up this year are the May 23 COCLS meeting and the summer picnic at Drake Park on June 9^th.

Amy Koshoffer announced the slate of candidates for the upcoming election:

Vice President/ President Elect – open; Secretary-Brigid Almaguer; and Treasurer- Cathy Constance. Emily Kean is the current Vice President/President Elect, so she will serve as president next year.

New business included a discussion of a membership dues increase – Amy will prepare a ballot for that vote.

We also discussed meeting planning options if a Program Chair is not found. The following people volunteered to help in the absence of a chair – Val Purvis, Brigid Almaguer, Edith Starbuck, Regina Hartman and Amy Koshoffer. Emily would like us to consider creating a Program budget to guide that committee as they plan for the year.

Regina Hartman volunteered along with Sharon Purtee and Amy Koshoffer to work on revising the CAHSLA bylaws and procedures manuals in the coming year.

One Comment: I support this idea because so many expenses have gone up while the dues have remained constant. I don't feel the dues increase to be unreasonable.

The business meeting was called to order at 6:45 by President Regina Hartman

Amy Koshoffer announced that the elected officers for next year are: Emily Kean, President; Program Committee in lieu of Vice-President/President Elect (see below); Cathy Constance, Treasurer; and Brigid Almaguer, Secretary.

The following members offered to be on the Program Committee for 2011-12: Val Purvis, Brigid Almaguer, Edith Starbuck, Regina Hartman and Amy Koshoffer.

Amy also provided us with the results of our election stating that the dues increase was passed.

Lisa McCormick extended the Chronicle deadline to Wednesday, June 15.

Regina presented the outgoing officers with beautiful flowers. Regina was given a thank you card for her year as President.

A Fascinating Read – Put This Book on Your “To Read” List

Brigid Almaquer (Cincinnati State’s Johnnie Mae Berry Library) highly recommends

The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer by Siddhartha Mukherjee which was just reviewed in the June 8, 2011 issue of JAMA (305(22):2357-2358). According to the review, The Emperor of All Maladies “is an extraordinary, Pulitzer Prize–winning treatise on cancer. With copious research, insight, and great literary panache, the author describes the biography of cancer, from the beginning of recorded time to the present. He starts by taking readers back to the time of the Queen Atossa of Persia (approximately 530 BCE), who may have had breast cancer—cancer that may have been excised by her slave, at least based on the author's interpretations from the literature.”

The book also covers the lives of some of the “giants” of modern cancer treatment, such as Dr. Sidney Farber a Harvard University pediatric pathologist who was the founder of Boston’s Children’s Cancer Research Foundation, now known as the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Farber revolutionized the treatment of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia which, at one time, was always fatal.

According to the JAMA review, “The book explores the growth of parallel sciences, including radiology and radiation therapy initiated through the work of Roentgen. The history of chemical dyes for histochemical staining by the Nobel Laureate Paul Ehrlich, the hijacking of such chemicals for warfare, and subsequently the retrieval of one of these war gases (nitrogen mustard) as chemotherapy for Hodgkin disease is described in vivid detail… Lastly, in addition to being a biography of cancer, the book is likewise a biography of patients … including Robert Sandler, the first of Farber's patients to achieve remission from ALL and to whom the book is generously dedicated. “

The reviewer concludes her review by stating, “The Emperor of All Maladies enables readers to remember and honor the struggle against cancer, the personalities (and their foibles) behind the achievements, and the battles against institutional resistance and inertia. It is an extraordinary book, providing thrilling details of the history of cancer, compassion for patients and healers, and hope for the future.”

MLA Annual Meeting 2011

Janet Doe Lecture: “Breaking the Barriers of Time and Space: The Dawning of the Great Age of Librarians”

Scott Plutchak, also known as “The Man in Black” and as a member of the world’s “first open access librarian band, The Bearded Pigs” was this year’s Janet Doe Lecturer.

As the program states, [the] “Janet Doe lecturers are chosen for their unique perspectives on the history or philosophy of medical librarianship.” Plutchak, associate professor and director Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences, University of Alabama – Birmingham brought his unique perspective to this year’s Doe lecture.

Plutchak has a long history of service to MLA, including being editor of the Journal of the Medical Library Association from 2000-2006. For followers of MEDLIB-L, he often posts insightful and debate inspiring commentaries on the list. He is a speaker with great natural abilities making the audience comfortable and ready to be a part of the conversation.

In his lecture, Plutchak ably put into context the current upheaval and identity crisis facing institutional libraries and librarians. He reminded us that the transition from hand-written manuscripts to Gutenberg’s moveable type led to the social and cultural revolution of sixteenth century Europe, which included a revolution for institutional libraries. These libraries faced an identity crisis: historically they were the keepers and gatekeepers of scarce manuscripts, and Gutenberg’s printing press brought the book to the masses. Renaissance librarians had to redefine their role in the wake of the printed book revolution.

Today’s knowledge revolution (or is it evolution?) challenges us, according to Plutchak, to see libraries as merely collections of objects. Librarians are not solely about preserving or warehousing objects but are about “connecting people to knowledge.” Library collections are merely a tool librarians use to bring people together with intellectual content of the past and present. Our goal as professionals is to use our well honed skills for the communities we serve. We are not defined by the physical space and collections we manage, rather we are defined by our knowledge and skills of connecting people to content.

Plutchak maintains that the physical library is still relevant, however, we need to redeploy it as space for collaborative interactions with easy access to our knowledge tools – books, media, and the web, cloud computing, etc. He also exhorts librarians to bring their skills to an area that has yet to be fully organized for data mining – locally developed repositories and the grey literature. Librarians, he states, are uniquely equipped to help filter or cut through the digital clutter, which for our many customers turns out to be “an overload of needles, not a needle in a haystack.”

This is, according to Plutchak, “the great age of librarians.” We are on the cusp of a new age, and we must realize that we won’t get it right the first time. We are confronting distinctive challenges created by our new knowledge tools, so we are bound not to get it right the first time. We are all muddling through together, and we will learn from our mistakes. This IS the great age of librarians, and as Lucretia McClure, the nation’s longest serving medical librarian once said, “Money talks but people count.” Our profession is defined by our human capital – these are the people who count in this great new age of librarians.

MLA’11: Rethinking technology

The theme of this year’s MLA annual meeting was “rethink.” This was my first chance to attend the annual meeting, and I was especially excited about the prospect of attending the technology panels and events.

The biggest technology draw for the conference was the Top Tech Trends V panel sponsored by the Medical Informatics Section. As the name implies, this was the fifth year that the annual conference has had a panel discussing emerging technologies in medical librarianship. For this year, Michelle Kraft was the moderator and the panelists were Amy Chatfield, Eric Schnell, Emily Hurst, Emily Morton-Owens, and Bart Ragon.

Amy Chatfield from the University of Southern California presented several online productivity and scheduling tools, such as Meet-O-Matic and WhenIsGood. She highlighted Presdo as a tool that can be integrated with Google calendars, and doodle as an online scheduling tool that can be used anonymously. Time Bridge was also mentioned as a tool that can be used to synchronize document attachments amongst multiple participants. Amy also gave some examples of project management tools, such as Manymoon, which bills itself as “the social productivity platform for managing projects,” and can be incorporated with LinkedIn to monitor tasks and due dates. Additional collaboration tools such as MixedInk for voting on project document changes and Crocodoc for commenting, editing, and filling out PDFs were also discussed.

Eric Schnell from The Ohio State University presented on his blog post from earlier this year about whether libraries should create native or web apps. A native app uses the full functionality of the device and can be used on- or offline, where a web app involves uploading to a web service. Eric also mentioned Boopsie as a contractor with library experience for those libraries wishing to have a mobile presence but who may not have the in-house staff to develop an app.

Emily Hurst from the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center presented on the importance of using data visualization in reporting and communicating data. She discussed several ways to overcome “emotionless data representation” and stressed the importance of standardizing data before the visualization process. Some beginner resources that were mentioned include Wordle for creating word clouds, Gapminder for manipulating existing datasets, and LigerCat as a visualization tool for PubMed results.

Emily Morton-Owens from New York University described a problem that is all too familiar to anyone using Google these days: a trend she called “adversarial information retrieval” or the explosion of content farms, such as Answer.com, Ask.com, and ehow.com, showing up as the top results in online searches. She referenced a Slate.com article that describes how the process works and mentions Google’s response to combat this problem by changing its algorithm. The Slate article also points out that one of the most prolific content farms is actively using the words “health,” “healthy”, etc. as tags for its low quality articles, making this an issue which affects medical librarians, especially those educating consumers (and possibly healthcare professionals, as well) about quality information retrieval.

Finally, Bart Ragon from the University of Virginia presented a more philosophical presentation on the adaptation of networking technologies, using the proliferation of content on-demand services such as Netflix as an example. He mentioned online services such as Flipboard, an iPad app that allows users to congregate magazine content and social media in a personalized interface. In the medical library realm, he discussed the New England Journal of Medicine’s video content and PowerPoint slide availability, as well as mentioning Elsevier’s journal Cell as the “journal of the future” for its multi-media content and collaborative capabilities. He finished by discussing the implications of these emerging trends for libraries, such as licensing for concurrent users, ability for online downloads, and accessibility and availability of online/digital content.

In general, from the Top Tech Trends panel and the rest of the conference, I took away a much stronger desire to facilitate ease of use of our electronic resources for our patrons. I’m eager to continue strengthening the technology behind the scenes to make accessing quality information appear seamless for our patrons, all the while continuing to improve our branding and library marketing so users know the resources are being provided to them by librarians. For no matter how great emerging technology trends may be, as Lucretia McClure says, “a thinking librarian is the best resource in the library.”

The Executive Board of SWON Libraries is pleased to introduce you to our new Executive Director, Melanie A. McDonald. Melanie has worked in school, academic and special libraries and is a graduate of the University of Illinois’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science. In addition to libraries, Melanie has worked in the business and non-profit sectors specializing in outreach, process improvement, change management, innovation leadership, new service/product development and mentoring.

Melanie is a member of ALA and SLA where she served for two years on the board of the Military Libraries Division as Corporate Member. She is the inaugural Spread the Word columnist for Documents to the People (DTTP), the journal of the Government Documents Round Table of ALA.

Says McDonald, “I’m very excited to be joining SWON Libraries at this pivotal time for libraries in the state of Ohio and Kentucky. So many people need us more than ever and our responses, the decisions we make now, can have a major positive impact on our futures. Looking forward to meeting and listening to all of our members over the coming year.”

OK, news from the golden shores of the Midwest Retiree:

We recently took two trips, one to the Outer Banks/DC and one to the heart of the Midwest, Mattoon, Illinois. Both were occasioned by the deaths of youngish family members of my husband's, one was his sister and the other was a cousin whom we had not seen for some time, but had fond memories of her. The Outer Banks trip took us to Ocracoke Island, at the southernmost tip of the Banks. There were many people who journeyed down to scatter ashes on the beach at sunset, including one of our daughters and her s.o., so we had a mini-get together with them, and also reminenced about our previous beach days. Ocracoke is a tiny town, with a beautiful beach and many B&Bs, a good family place. People were constantly out walking or biking on the main road (speed limit for cars is 25 mph). The restaurants are surprisingly good and plentiful. No bookstores that I saw, but there is a good one in Buxton, several miles away that provides a good excuse for an auto trip.

We concluded this trip by driving to Washington to visit old friends and take in the American Indian Museum. I would recommend this museum even if you are not particularly interested in Indian artifacts. It was designed in collaboration with members of the various tribes represented, and they chose the design of the exhibits, the objects displayed, and approved the texts. I thought we would zip through and then eat at the restaurant, which has quickly achieved a reputation for wonderful food, which it deserves. We wound up staying in the exhibits for several hours. There were 6 of us, and we would gather at the set time to meet, then drift off to see "one more thing" until the afternoon was nearly over. Fortunately we ate first.

Our Midwest experience took us to Mattoon, Illinois, The one the only, as a graffiti near the public library stated. Cincinnati is not the midwest! Out there, people are very close to their farming experience, and are very proud of having grown up on the farm. Of course, many of those farms are now subdivisions, but that agrarian way of life is still with them. We visited one of the cousins who is 90 now, lives in a retirement community, and is still fiercely independent. We talked about politics, the good and bad of retirement living, the need for more inter-generational relationships, etc. etc. Old people have a lot more to offer than just warnings about getting old. I did not visit any libraries or bookstores. I didn't have the time to winkle out the bookstores, and didn't have time to stop at the two Carnegie libraries I saw, which I truly enjoy doing, to see how other people handle their collections, especially in these hard times.

We are planning a trip out to see Dorothy and Maury Gilroy before such a trip is too much. We have many friends along the way, so driving is the practical method, plus flying just makes me angry. That will be another report from the fields. In the meantime, stay cool, keep calm and carry on!

In the Literature

Sickness sleuths use social media to spot and track trends

Social media sites—including Facebook, Google, Twitter, Foursquare, and Wikipedia—are changing how epidemiologists discover and track the spread of disease, according to a June 13th New York Times article.

Public health officials historically would investigate outbreaks with diagnostic kits and by gathering test results and data without telling the public that investigations were under way or announcing the results for months. Now, new technology is allowing more individuals to get involved in the disease-hunting process, and more epidemiologists are considering using social networking sites to track pathogens, the Times reports.

In the past few years, researchers have identified regional spikes in seasonal flu at least one week before CDC by tracking online search queries and following Twitter streams. In addition, researchers are using Craigslist data to try to identify patterns of sexual behavior associated with an increase in syphilis cases.

Leveraging social media's disease tracking potential

John Brownstein, an assistant pediatrics professor at Harvard Medical School, teamed up with Clark Freifeld, a software developer, to design HealthMap, a website that pinpoints global health outbreaks in real time by scouring the Internet for disease reports. It looks at local news articles, blogs, Twitter, and official CDC and World Health Organization reports. In a related mobile application, called Outbreaks Near Me, users can detect where infectious hazards are found. Brownstein also is working with CDC and Google to develop online tracking tools for dengue fever.

According to Philip Polgreen, director of the Infectious Diseases Society of America's emerging infections network, social media can present a trove of new data and should become an important addition to traditional disease surveillance, especially for new and emerging conditions with little or no historical information.

Skeptics raise concerns

Meanwhile, skeptics of using social media to track diseases say Internet-based searches can be unproductive and spread large amounts of misinformation. Other opponents say that using social media can provide only the illusion of better disease tracking, noting that it is difficult to ensure that resources are pooling an even amount of information from different areas. In addition, online data can be skewed, as most social networking users live in urban areas and tend to be younger, according to the Times (Garrity, Times, 6/13).

175 Years of Advancing Biomedical Knowledge by Anita Slomski

Slomski offers a short history of NLM focusing on the advances made primarily under the leadership of Donald A. B. Lindberg, MD “…a pioneer in the application of computers to medicine. Lindberg came to the NLM in 1984 from the University of Missouri, where he was a professor of information science and pathology. “ Slomski reviews the developments that enabled the creation of PubMed. Other NLM contributions to scientific knowledge that Slomski mentions are The Visible Human Project, the Clinical Trials Registry, Disaster Response and the Human Genome.

President’s Page

When I was growing up, something about the springtime always made my parents start quoting poetry. For my mom, it was always Tennyson’s “In the spring a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love.” And for my dad, his favorite version of the whimsical little ditty: “Spring has sprung, the grass has riz, I wonder where the flowers is?” - which I have to admit, sprang to my lips on Monday when I was backing down the driveway and noticed my daffodils had “popped” overnight! I guess I’m carrying on the family tradition in some way, because my 7 year-old told me I say that every year!

The promise of spring and the earth’s awakening reminds me of the cycles of our CAHSLA year as well. Soon, Amy Koshoffer will be heading up the Nominations and Elections Committee and will be contacting the membership to build the slate of nominees for our next election. Please consider running for office or nominating another member for a leadership position. Let’s all do our part to make sure CAHSLA continues to be a vibrant organization!

I want to thank Emily Kean and her Program Committee for continuing to provide us with quality meetings and thought-provoking topics for discussion at our COCLS gatherings. I’ve always believed that the collaboration and collegial exchange of ideas among our members is one of the benefits of membership, and this continues to be the case! I won’t be attending the MLA Annual Meeting and Exhibition in Minneapolis this year due to a scheduling conflict, so I’m counting on others of you who are going for updates, both professional and extracurricular! The past several years, MLA has been making more and more meeting content available online for members who can’t attend the meeting, or want to access the material after the fact. This year the cost is $100 if you register on or before May 16th, and this fee provides online access to audio sessions with electronic presentations, streaming video of keynote and other select plenary sessions, posters before, during, and after the meeting as well as access to the program and abstract book. It’s a nice way to enjoy the benefits of attending without leaving your office!

The COCLS gatherings have been very well attended thus far. The next meeting will tentatively take place in the month of May, between the CAHSLA business and summer meetings. So far, we have discussed e-books and how technology has impacted our workflows. For the next meeting, it was suggested we discuss electronic journal subscriptions. Topics might include ERMS, A-Z lists, or patron access points. Depending on the timing, the May COCLS meeting might also be a good time for an MLA meeting recap.

OHSLA Spring Meeting

CAHSLA Colleagues

From Beth White: Although I haven’t been to a CAHSLA meeting in years, I always read the newsletter. I’m still working for Ethicon Endo-Surgery. Johnson& Johnson decided to change the way they engage individual contractors. A group of us who have been working independently for EES decided to form a company, called Septagon Research Group LLC, which began operation on January 1, 2011. Five of us are researchers. Suellen Fortine and I are local, the other three women in New Jersey, North Carolina and Florida. Our two ‘User Administration’ colleagues provide IT support and maintain the website of what was formerly the Information Resource Center. We are an entirely women-owned enterprise!

At the same time, a reorganization at EES placed the information center function under a new group which includes a competitive intelligence component. This is a very exciting opportunity. Other good news – Cindy Meisner has moved back to Cincinnati from Michigan and is a manager in the CI department.

We (Septagon) have been so busy with all the issues of establishing a new business with 7 employees (I had no idea it would be so much work!) and working with EES to get the CI function going, plus getting a new client, that we haven’t had time to get our website developed yet. My new business email is bwhite@septagonresearch.com.

I feel so fortunate, especially in this economy, to have this work, doing what I love. I live in Clifton, with my partner and only one dog (at the moment). If I had my way I’d have 3 or 4 more running around!

Congratulations to Jennifer Heffron (TriHealth Bethesda)

Jennifer ran the 5K race for the American Heart Association’s Heart Mini Marathon on March 20. I (Lisa McCormick) was at the event and saw Jennifer cross the finish line. I got in touch with her to find out about her running. She writes: “I have been running for about a year now, and I have competed in two other 5K races. The Heart Mini was my 3rd race. For 2011, I have goals to run in the Hyde Park Blast in June (4 miles), and to complete the Thanksgiving Day 10K race!” Way to go Jennifer!

One of the great benefits of being retired is having time to read a lot of books just for fun. I received a Kindel as a retirement present at CCHMC, and I'm using it even more than I thought I would. I have a subscription to the local newspaper on it, and it's great to get up in the morning and have the paper waiting for me to read with my coffee without having to trek out our driveway and down to the entrance of our lane to get a paper copy out of the mailbox. Plus it goes with me whenever we're out of town. I'm also getting more books on my Kindel than I might have in Cincinnati because I've found that the public library system here doesn't come close to what I was used to in Cincinnati. Between PLCHC and OhioLink, I could get any book I wanted, but Charlottesville's Jefferson-Madison Regional Library just can't compare, and of course I no longer have access to a network like OhioLink (one small downside to being retired).

I'm still keeping up with the reading for my two book clubs in Cincinnati, plus I've added two more book clubs here in Charlottesville. Recently I reread Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese which was published in 2009. Many of you may have read it already, but if not, I highly recommend it, as well as an earlier memoir Verghese wrote titled My Own Country: A Doctor's Story. He's a wonderful writer with a doctor's perspective.

Clinical librarians as facilitators of nurses' evidence-based practice.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to explore nurses' and ward-based clinical librarians' reflections on ward-based clinical librarians as facilitators for nurses' use of evidences-based practice. Nurses' use of evidence-based practice is reported to be weak. Studies have suggested that clinical librarians may promote evidence-based practice. To date, little is known about clinical librarians participating nurses in the wards. A descriptive, qualitative design was adopted for the study. In 2007, 16 nurses who had been attended by a clinical librarian in the wards were interviewed in focus groups. Two clinical librarians were interviewed by individual interviews. In the analysis, a content analysis was used. Three themes were generated from the interviews with nurses: 'The grip of everyday work', 'To articulate clinical nursing issues' and 'The clinical librarians at a catalyst'. The nurses experienced the grip of everyday work as a hindrance and had difficulties to articulate and formulate relevant nursing issues. In such a state, the nurses found the clinical librarian presence in the ward as enhancing the awareness of and the use of evidence-based practice. Three themes emerged from the analysis with the librarians. They felt as outsiders, had new knowledge and acquired a new role as ward-based clinical librarians. Facilitation is needed if nurses' evidence-based practice is going to increase. The combined use of nurses and clinical librarians' knowledge and skills can be optimised. To achieve this, nurses' skills in consuming and implementing evidence ought to be strengthened. The fusion of the information and knowledge management skill of the ward-based clinical librarian and the clinical expertise of the nurses can be of value. With such a collaborative model, nurse and ward-based clinical librarian might join forces to increase the use of evidence-based practice.

Abstract: Aims. This paper is a report of a study conducted to explore the relationship between nurses' personal and professional factors and evidence-based nursing practice. Background. Like most health-related professions, nursing is shifting from the traditional intuition-based paradigm to evidence-based nursing practice. Methods. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2007 with a convenience sample of 243 nurses from northern

, who worked in hospitals or in the community. Associations between background variables and evidence-based nursing practice were examined. For the purpose of finding factors that predicted behaviour, a logistic regression analysis was conducted. Results. The self-reported professional behaviour of nurses with a degree was more evidence-based than that of those without a degree. Moreover, evidence-based nursing practice was more likely where there was access to a rich library with nursing and medical journals, and opportunities for working with a computer and for searching the Internet in the workplace. The variables emerging as predicting evidence-based nursing practice were: education, skills in locating various research sources, support of the organization for searching and reading professional literature, knowledge sources based on colleagues and system procedures (inhibiting variable), knowledge sources based on reading professional literature, and knowledge sources based on experience or intuition. Conclusion. The findings point to the need for research-based information, exposure to professional journals and, in particular, organizational support for evidence-based nursing practice.

Small, cute dog? Check.

Yale Law School, renowned for competitiveness and its Supreme Court justices, is embarking on a pilot program next week in which students can check out a “therapy dog” named Monty along with the library’s collection of more than one million books.

While the law school is saying little so far about its dog-lending program, it has distributed a memo to students with the basics: that Monty will be available at the circulation desk to stressed-out students for 30 minutes at a time beginning Monday, for a three-day trial run.

The school is not saying what sort of dog Monty is; what happens to him when school is out of session; or how Monty himself may be kept from becoming overstressed with all his play dates.

Monty, according to the memo to students, is hypoallergenic and will be kept in a nonpublic space inside the library, presumably away from those who don’t much like dogs.

Philip Pullman's call to defend libraries resounds around web

Impassioned polemic against closures picked up by thousands of readers

"Leave the libraries alone. You don’t understand their value," said

best-selling British author Philip Pullman.  Pullman was roused to

the scorching critique by Oxfordshire county council's plans to stop

funding nearly half of its 43 libraries, and instead hand them over to

be run by community volunteers. The novelist compared the current

cutbacks to the laying waste of the great Library of Alexandria in the

4th century, reserving particular scorn for the idea of volunteer-run

libraries, which he called "patronising nonsense". "Does he think the

job of a librarian is so simple, so empty of content, that anyone can step

Greetings to one and all as we enter this season of peace and joy! I can scarcely believe that 2011 is just around the corner! I hope you find time to relax and enjoy the holiday season with your family and friends.

The Program Committee provided a wonderful opportunity for mingling with CAHSLA Colleagues on December 8, 2010 at the William Howard Taft National Historic Site on Auburn Avenue. The home was decorated in turn-of-the century Christmas décor – including a Christmas tree hanging from the ceiling on the bedroom of one of the Taft’s children. Our guide provided an entertaining look into the everyday life of the Taft family. Following the tour we enjoyed a variety of delicious hors d’oeuvres and desserts in the Taft Education Center.

Another CAHSLA tradition I enjoy and anticipate each year is looking at the children’s books our membership collects for a non-profit. This year we collected over 40 books! It is so much fun to look through the books to see what the members select. Many of the books are ones I enjoyed reading to my girls. It is inspiring to know that CAHSLA might be helping another generation fall in love with reading and adventure. The recipient of this year’s book collection is the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greater Cincinnati. The IHN serves homeless families in our area with many needed services including education for the children of these families.

Treasurer and Membership Chair Cathy Constance reminds us that it is not too late to submit your membership dues to CAHSLA. I encourage you to join and to recruit someone from your library as a new member. You receive many networking and educational event opportunities throughout the year as a benefit of CAHSLA membership.

One of the interesting tidbits I learned during our tour was a quote attributed to William Howard Taft’s mother. She is said to have described President Taft’s family home in Cincinnati as his "inspiration to everything that was good." I hope that CAHSLA will continue to be our inspiration for achieving good in the local health sciences library community, as well as, to the larger Cincinnati community in the new year.

We met at the Farmer’s Shed where our tour guide, Cheryl Eagleson, described the history of the market including its inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places, its origin as a “public market”, and its rich 19^th Since its renovations in 2004, Findlay Market has been managed by the private, non-profit Corporation of Findlay Market (CFFM) and is currently 100% merchant occupied. century architecture.

Our next stop was the pastry, sandwich & chocolates shop of Skirtz & Johnston for a delicious, catered assortment of hors d’oeuvres, drinks and desserts enjoyed by all – thank you Emily!!!

The business meeting was called to order at 6PM by President, Regina Hartman with an introduction of the officers for 2010/11. Next on the agenda was news from VP/Program Chair, Emily Kean who outlined the possibilities for this year’s upcoming meetings. A resurrection of COCLS was discussed as a platform to share information about emerging technologies. Meetings would be scheduled to occur in the months between CAHSLA meetings. Emily asked that any ideas for a Spring workshop or training be emailed to her.

Annual membership dues were paid to Cathy Constance, Treasurer who reported that the treasury currently holds $2797.

The annual holiday party was held at the William Howard Taft Education Center on Auburn Avenue. The group enjoyed a guided tour of the Taft home which was decorated in Victorian style for the holidays, including a Christmas tree hanging over a bed upstairs.

Fruit punch, appetizers and desserts were provided by CAHSLA through Emily Kean and Regina Hartman.

Carole Baker entertained us with games of Christmas riddles, word scrambles and who’s who in holiday movies proving that most of us are not ready for Jeopardy anytime soon. Holiday wrapped door prizes and game prizes were awarded to some lucky recipients by Carole Baker.

More than 40 children’s books were collected for the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greater Cincinnati.

Upcoming CAHSLA Programs

The next CAHSLA event will be the training session held in either February or March. As we’ve done in the past, we’re planning to have a vendor come to us for a training session and would like some input in selecting the product that would be of the most interest to the most CAHSLA members. Please watch your email for a short survey after the first of the year.

For the April business meeting, Lisa McCormick, Manager of The Jewish Hospital Health Sciences Library, will give a presentation about her trip to visit Jewish Hospital’s sister hospital in Netanya, Israel. The meeting is tentatively scheduled to be held at The Christ Hospital, but if anyone would like to volunteer their space, please let me know.

The Planning Committee is already looking ahead to summer as well. We’ve been discussing hosting the annual summer picnic at Drake Park since so many CAHSLA members enjoy the location. We are open to another location for the picnic; please let me know as soon as possible if you have a suggesion.

Many of you noticed that we slightly broke from tradition at the holiday party this year and had CAHSLA provide the food. We thought we’d switch things up a bit this year and have everyone bring a dish to the summer picnic instead. We’ll send more information as the June picnic date gets closer, but feel free to start thinking of your favorite summer side dish or sweet treat to share!

Patient Centered Communication and Low Health Literacy: What is Ohio Doing to Advance Best Practice?

The Ohio Collaborative for Clear Health Communication is a statewide interest group for health professionals in public health, academia, and hospitals with the goal of bringing attention to the complex problem of low health literacy and promoting best practice for health care organizations to respond to the challenges this issues presents for preventive health and health care delivery. Currently, I am serving as OHSLA representative to the Collaborative. For those of us in hospitals, we have recently heard more about the impact of low health literacy as it relates to patient education and patient rights as part of the Joint Commissions new standards for 2012.

The Collaborative maintains a web page with links to important health literacy resources. The group is also looking at best practices in clear health communication throughout the country. One such model program that has been identified is Health Literacy Missouri which has been very successful in obtaining grant funding for their programs and initiatives.

The Collaborative presents an annual educational workshop related to developments and best practice in clear health communication/low health literacy. This year the all-day workshop was held at the newly opened Ohio State University Ohio Union. This magnificent building is the new “student union” for OSU, but it is like no student union I have ever seen! If you ever have the chance to visit, please do, so that you can enjoy the multi-story great hall with stone fireplaces, mosaic terrazzo floors, and cozy nests of seating. OSU President Gordon Gee took time from his schedule to personally welcome the attendees to the workshop.

The workshop covered many important aspects of health literacy with many excellent speakers. For this report, I will highlight a few of the topics and speakers. Dr. Sandy Cornett, Director of the OSU/AHEC Clear Health Communication Program at the OSU College of Medicine gave an overview of the National Action Plan to Improve Health Literacy. Ryan Squire, BA, Program Manager, Communications & Marketing, OSU Medical Center spoke to the importance of social media in addressing health literacy. Mira Katz Ph.D., presented some remarkable results of the work she has done with Ohio’s Amish community. Some of the lessons she has learned in the Amish community may have value in working with other underserved populations. Dr Katz is Associate Professor, Health Behavior & Health Promotion, OSU College of Public Health. Diane Moyer RN, MS, Associate, Director, Patient Education, OSU Medical Center provided the audience with practical yet challenging information regarding how we might ensure that written materials and translated materials meet low health literacy standards. She also gave an overview of the Patient Centered Communication Standards that will become part of the Joint Commission Survey process in 2012.

In conclusion, if you have an interest in clear health communication/low health literacy, I invite you to become familiar with the Ohio Collaborative for Clear Health Communication. The Collaborative provides some valuable resources, including networking opportunities and continuing education. I will be sure to spread the word to CAHSLA when the workshop for 2011 is announced so that you can plan to attend.

OHSLA Fall Meeting

On Oct 18^th, I attended the Fall 20 10 OHSLA meeting in Dayton Ohio. The presenter Pat Wagner gave a seminar on Everyday Leadership. She had ambitious goals for her presentation and loads of informational handouts. She mentioned that she does not copyright her material and encourages sharing. She started the presentation by talking about what leaders do, i.e. create compelling futures, model behavior, inspire others to do their best and to participate in creating futures, succeeds and leaders create leaders. She discussed a model of leadership to help the participants understand where they are in the hierarchy and to see how leaders think and act in this model. The three tiers of the model were Task, Management and Leader. In this model, most people are at the task level and have a short outlook of a few months. Management tends to think in terms of months to a few years. Leaders think in terms of years 5 to 10 years. Pat described leaders as time travelers who try to visit the future and then create opportunity in the present to achieve their vision of the future. She mentioned that the task level has many attractions and that people are comfortable that this level. The work can feel like real work and gives immediate satisfaction. Remaining at this level did not push one out of their comfort zone. Pat discussed that leaders take risks and she discussed ways of improving risk tolerance. One way was to look at the best and worst case outcome for actions. She also discussed three steps to influence behavior: 1) build rapport 2) collect information to understand the big picture 3) take actions with understanding of choices. Pat encouraged all to become leaders to improve your work situation and to help move you up the ladder.

Pat also took a few minutes to talk about Strategic Planning. She actually had a handout called The Five minute Strategic Plan. Let me know if you would like a copy.

One item that came out of this meeting is that a survey is being created in hopes of determining how OHSLA can better serve Ohio Health Science Librarians and how to encourage higher meeting attendance. One member present talked about his feelings that the meetings do not have enough time for interaction between members. There was much information to assimilate. Pat told many great stories about her father and made the sessions entertaining so the day flew by very fast.

GMR Print Retention Project Update

The GMR has appointed a Print Retention Task Force to advise and assist us with planning for a print retention program to be put in place during the next 5-year contract. The current focus is on gathering data about legacy journal print collections in the region.

The group was tasked with analyzing the data obtained from a recent Resource Library (RL) survey, looking at SERHOLD data, interviewing RL Directors and others in the region to identify interests and scope, and recommending an action plan for the design and implementation of next steps. The goal is to produce a framework for further action by April 30, 2011 to hand over to a steering committee for further work in the next RML contract.

Life in Retirement Where the Livin' Is ... Busy!

Barbarie Hill writes "I have signed up to go with a Newcomers group to Washington, D.C. for a White House Christmas tour on December 7th. We have to be there at 7:00 a.m. so I'll be sleeping on the bus. It'll be a very long day, but I'm looking forward to it. I am now our Friends Meeting newsletter editor, and I joined the Charlottesville Women's Choir. Tom and I are regular attenders with the shape note singers (we did a demonstration for an Early American Music class at UVA last week), and I started my own book club, so I'm reading books for four different groups now. I made the Halloween costumes for the grandkids, and I've started several sewing projects for
Christmas along with making Christmas cards. I'm probably going to get involved in the Books Behind Bars project that sends books to prisoners around the country. It's great to be able to do all the fun things I want to do.

The University of Cincinnati’s Henry R. Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions has received a $100,000 grant from the John Hauck Foundation. The grant puts the University of Cincinnati Libraries beyond its total fundraising goal for the completion of the construction project critical to the preservation of Cincinnati’s rare and fragile medical collections. The new facility will specifically provide the following improvements to the Winkler Center’s ability to preserve fragile collections:

An environmentally controlled and secure facility for the Winkler Center’s rare, unique, and fragile collections by achieving temperature and relative humidity standards.

Monitoring capabilities to ensure security of the collections.

An additional exhibit gallery that will attract more visitors to view the center’s treasures.

Secure research room for visitors to use the Center’s materials.

An archival services area where staff will process new collections and curate and preserve existing collections such as the Albert B. Sabin archives.

The final phase of the Winkler Center’s construction is expected to be completed by September 2011.

Tool Finds Trends in Google Books By Jane Seo, CRIMSON staff writer

A team of Harvard researchers has created a new tool that analyzes language patterns in published books to quantify cultural and historical trends from 1800 to 2000. The innovative research tool made its debut yesterday in an article titled “Quantitative Analysis of Culture Using Millions of Digitized Books,” which was published online in the journal Science and launched as a feature on Google. Dubbed “culturomics,” the tool enables the public to use the Google Books database as a “genome of culture,” according to Adrian Veres ’12, one of the article’s authors. “Fundamentally speaking, you can see what society is interested in by tracking the frequency of the word,” Veres said. “The more common the word, the more important it is.” Google’s launching of the online tool will allow users to type in a word or a phrase and see how their usage has changed over the past two centuries.

Google Books is a set of digitized texts that includes about 4 percent of all books ever printed. While more than 70 percent of the books are printed in English, the database also includes texts in French, Spanish, German, Chinese, Russian, and Hebrew. This publicly accessible database provides a “quantitative aspect to the social sciences and the humanities that has never been paralleled before,” said Veres, adding that he believes published books provide important historical insights, as they reveal traces of culture as perceived by people. “These books are a meaningful representation of what’s important at [a specific] time,” he said.

In addition to discussing how the tool was conceived, the article showcases the type of analysis it provides. For example, users can see how language and grammar have evolved, how lexicography and censorship have trended over time, and how individuals have garnered fame by elucidating the frequency
of their names in published works. Psychology Professor Steven Pinker, a co-author of the article, noted the academic significance of the tool, which will enable linguists to see how often and in what context certain words were used. “The tool revolutionizes the humanities by answering questions about the
influence of humans and ideas quantitatively,” said Pinker, who focused in the article on past tense and lexical ‘dark matter’—a term that describes infrequently used words that do not appear in standard dictionaries.

Led by two Harvard affiliates, Jean-Baptiste Michel and Erez Lieberman-Aiden, the team included researchers from Harvard, Google, Encyclopaedia Britannica, and the American Heritage Dictionary.

Librarian's Annual List of "Top Quotes" Gets Lots of Attention

Fred Shapiro, associate librarian at Yale Law School, recently released his fifth annual list of the most notable quotations of the year. The original Yale Book of Quotations was published in 2006. Since then, Shapiro has released an annual list of the top 10 quotes. He said they will be incorporated into the next edition of the book. According to Shapiro, he picks quotes that are famous, important or revealing of the spirit of the times. The quotes aren't necessarily the most eloquent or admirable. This year there is a tie for first place.

Let's not turn the page on picture books

For lovers of children's literature, the headline of a recent New York Times article came as a shock: "Picture Books No Longer a Staple for Children."

In the article, author Julie Bosman noted that the picture book "has been fading," a victim of both the economic downturn (picture books are costly) and parental pressure to have kids reading chapter books at an earlier age.

But the article looked only at publishers and bookstores, leaving out the place where many parents and children connect with picture books -- the local public library. At the Takoma Park, Md., Library, where I work as a children's/teen librarian, picture books still account for one of our biggest circulation categories. Instead of paying up to $18 each for a picture book, parents are instead checking them out for free from the library.

Yet Bosman did, unfortunately, get it right when it comes to the issue of parents urging their kids to read chapter books at earlier ages. As the children's librarian, I increasingly encounter parents who want their 3- and 4-year-olds to read chapter-book series like "The Magic Tree House" instead of picture books, even those picture books that have won the prestigious Caldecott Medal, given annually by the American Library Association for the best-illustrated children's book.

Is this necessarily a bad thing? No, but it's not necessarily the best thing for kids and reading, either. As a public librarian, I firmly believe that it's up to parents to determine what their children read. Yet parents themselves often need and welcome guidance as to the best reading choices.

That's definitely the case with picture books, which make a wonderfully rich reading experience for children long after they've made the jump to chapter books. Ask any reading expert, and they'll tell you that the vocabulary in many picture books is generally much more sophisticated than that in beginning readers, early chapter books or series books.

But the text, of course, comprises only one-half of a picture book. The illustrations also are an integral part of the book and must be "read" as well. For the youngest readers, the illustrations usually are what they focus on when they snuggle up with you for family story time. And this is a good thing, as focusing on the illustrations gives young readers lots of practice in visual literacy -- a key skill in our highly visual world.

In the best picture books, the text and illustrations are inseparable, each of them carrying a part of the story. Picture-book illustrations shouldn't just show what's written in the text, but instead add detail, depth and color that stretch the story.

For example, in this year's Caldecott Medal winner, "The Lion and the Mouse," illustrator Jerry Pinkney sets the classic Aesop fable in the Serengetti and gives the mouse a family. With these artistic decisions, Pinkey's illustrations give the traditional tale an entirely new spin, enriching our understanding of Aesop's story.

It's also important for parents to know that picture books come in all types. Some, like those of Laura Vaccaro Seeger and Denise Fleming, are aimed at the very young. These books feature simple texts and bright illustrations, making them just right for toddlers and preschoolers.

Other picture books are best for older children. For example, several of the books by author/illustrator Patricia Polacco, such as "Pink and Say" and "The Butterfly," not only have lengthy texts, but they also deal with death and other difficult issues that are better understood by older readers and even adults.

At our library, we try to help guide parents and children by placing "For Older Readers" stickers on books that are focused on difficult issues, have lots of text or are based on previous knowledge. For example, both "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs" by Jon Scieszka and "The Three Pigs" by David Wiesner require young readers to know the original story and to have at least a rudimentary understanding of satire.

Overall, children thrive on a varied diet of reading choices, including picture books. Just ask your local librarian if you need help finding the right mix for your child's reading pleasure.

Chickens in Libraries
A chicken walks into the library. It goes up to the circulation desk and says: "book, bok, bok, boook".

The librarian hands the chicken a book. It tucks it under his wing and runs out. A while later, the chicken runs back in, throws the first book into the return bin and goes back to the librarian saying: "book, bok, bok, bok, boook". Again the librarian gives it a book, and the chicken runs out. The librarian shakes her head.

Within a few minutes, the chicken is back, returns the book and starts all over again: "boook, book, bok bok boook". The librarian gives him yet a third book, but this time as the chicken is running out the door, she follows it.
The chicken runs down the street, through the park and down to the riverbank. There, sitting on a lily pad is a big, green frog. The chicken holds up the book and shows it to the frog, saying: "Book, bok, bok, boook". The frog blinks, and croaks: "read-it, read-it, read-it".

That's what you get for trying to please a frog.

President’s Page

It seems that once again I find myself in a CAHSLA role that I’ve come to in a rather unorthodox fashion. A few years ago, we were unable to find someone to run for Vice President/President Elect. After some creative brainstorming, several of our members stepped up to the plate to take on the Program Committee duties of that office, and the following year, I stepped in as President. Then, you may recall, back in the summer of 2008 with the elimination of the Mercy libraries our organization was left without our President-Elect Carissa Thatcher, who lost her job. Again we were creative in maintaining our organizational structure, and I continued in the role of Program Chair in her absence. This year we have a somewhat similar situation since Meredith Orlowski gave birth to beautiful baby Marilyn and moved to Philly for her husband Bob’s residency. I’m happy to be back in this role, and I am struck by a couple of things: namely, that our organization has the flexibility to meet the challenges we face, and that our members want to see CAHSLA continue to be a vibrant organization.

Along those lines, during our recent transition meeting, the Executive Committee discussed ways to increase our membership. We’ve had several long-time members retire recently, and while many retired members continue to stay active in CAHSLA, it gives us an opportunity to reach out to others and invite them to join. I encourage you to personally invite your coworkers who may not be members. We plan to invite librarians from more local colleges that offer nursing and allied health programs and look forward to welcoming potential new members at the first meeting of our CAHSLA year, the Membership Meeting. Emily Kean and her committee have planned a wonderful kick-off meeting which includes a tour of the fabulous Findlay Market! See her article in this issue for more details on the meeting. The program committee also has plans to revive (at the very least the spirit of) COCLS - the Cincinnati Online Consortium for Life Sciences.

As I write this I am looking forward to a lovely fall-like evening in Cincinnati, though I hear we are not quite finished with summer weather just yet! Fall is my favorite time of the year -– I love those crisp cool evenings, fall color, and the fried-chicken-hayride-out-to-the-pumpkin-patch tradition that my family partakes in each year at Lobenstein’s Pumpkin Festival in St. Leon, Indiana! After the hectic end of the summer with kids going off to school and students returning to campus, it’s nice to settle down to a regular routine. I love evenings when I can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee while curling up with a good book. Fall ushers in the season filled with lots of memories of warm hearths and family traditions. I hope this fall is a wonderful one for you, and I look forward to seeing you at the Membership Meeting on October 7th!

The meeting was called to order by Regina Hartman at 3PM.

Regina Hartman distributed the 2010/11 CAHSLA Executive Committee name and address list and had available a copy of the current Procedures Manual and Bylaws for anyone needing a copy. She will look into the revision schedule for both of these documents.

Minutes were reviewed from the End-of-Year Picnic held on June 14, 2010. There were no additions or corrections.

Emily Kean, Program Chair, discussed the goal of recruiting new members for CAHSLA. She recommends marketing the benefits of CAHSLA membership to nursing programs at four year colleges, community colleges, and for-profit nursing schools. Regina will contact former members about rejoining. Emily is also working on securing a venue for the fall membership meeting which will be held in late September or early October. Several places were mentioned; however they charge fees for the use of their facilities. Other ideas from the group included the William Howard Taft Home (last visited by CAHSLA in 1994); Spring Grove Cemetery; Harriet Beecher Stowe House on Gilbert Avenue, and the new Clifton library branch (if that planned relocation becomes a reality).

The Financial Report form Cathy Constance was distributed – current assets total $2797.62.

Lisa McCormick and Barbarie Hill will publish the Chronicle in September. Lisa announced the deadline for submission as September 16th.

There being no other business for the Executive Committee, the meeting was adjourned at 4:15PM.

Notes from the Program Planning Committee

I’m joined on the Program Planning Committee this year by Carole Baker from St. Elizabeth and Stephanie Bricking from UC. We met over the summer to start planning CAHSLA’s programming year, and I hope you’ll be excited by what we have in store!

The annual membership meeting will take place this year at Findlay Market. According to their website, Findlay Market is “Ohio's oldest continuously operated public market” dating back to 1852, and I’m excited to learn more about the history of this vibrant Cincinnati landmark. We’ll end the tour and begin the meeting with hors d’oeuvres at one of Findlay’s newest additions – Skirtz & Johnston. As always, the membership meeting is a great opportunity to reacquaint ourselves with old friends and colleagues and introduce our organization to potential new members. Please spread the word about this meeting to anyone who may be interested. All are welcome!

I’m perhaps most excited this year to announce the return of COCLS. When I was first on the program planning committee several years ago, Val Purvis mentioned COCLS – “the organization that refused to die and instead went to lunch” – and with a tagline like that, how could I not be intrigued! Looking over Jane Thompson’s talk on CAHSLA history from 2004, a couple quotes about the objectives of COCLS stood out to me:

“to investigate innovations in and nuances of online systems” … “COCLS members are eager to maintain the educational and sharing aspects of the group” … “an agenda that focuses on technical aspects of our librarian lives”

The tentative plan is to schedule a monthly lunch or dinner COCLS meeting for months without CAHSLA meetings. The program committee is envisioning a very informal group setting where common ideas and concerns can be shared. Watch your e-mail for more information on this and future CAHSLA meetings!

Southwest Ohio and Neighboring Libraries

As the summer starts to wind down, we thought it would be a good time to update you on happenings at SWON Libraries. There is some important information in the message. So please read it and pass it on to others in your organization. If you have any questions or suggestions, please reply. We love to hear from you!

I continue to serve as Interim Executive Director. In addition to regular activities, the staff has spent the past several weeks planning an office move. The lease on our current office ended and we found a much better deal just one mile from our current location. *As of August 27, our office will be located at 10901 Reed Hartman Highway, Suite 120, Blue Ash OH 45242. Please update your records.* Our phone numbers will remain the same, but our phones and website may be down around the 26th and 27th. We do not have a dedicated training space at our new office, but there is a seminar room and conference room directly across the
hall. So we will continue to hold some programs and meetings at our new space.

Vicky Sweeney, our Continuing Education Coordinator, has accepted a branch manager position at the Franklin-Springboro Public Library. Her last day as a full-time employee will be September 10. However, Vicky will continue to work one day per week for SWON Libraries. Her email address will continue to work, but most communications should be directed to Glen Horton. We wish Vicky the best of luck in her new position, but we are also happy that she will still be able to help with SWON Libraries events.

*At their August meeting, the Executive Board discussed the Executive Director and CE Coordinator vacancies. The group decided to begin the hiring process for an Executive Director with CE responsibilities.* A Search Committee has been formed and they plan to have the position posted by the end of August. We appreciate your patience over the next
few months while we work on restoring our staff.

Much is also happening with our other committees. The Strategic Planning Committee continues to work on a draft plan. A new Policy and Operations Committee has been formed and will hold their first meeting next week. Delivery service was suspended about a year ago, but a new Delivery Committee will soon evaluate and explore ways to restore the service. *These committees can still benefit from additional volunteers. Diagnosis: Reference Anxiety Disorder

State Farm Insurance Librarian Adam Bennington has a fun yet serious article in a recent issue of Searcher magazine titled A practical guide to coping with reference anxiety disorder. Bennington brings to light a little-discussed disorder: the secret shame of library and information professionals who can’t stop searching for “the” answer, named Reference Anxiety Disorder (RAD).

Many of us will reluctantly admit that we experience feelings of guilt, shame and doubt when we can’t find the answer. We know it is out there – it has to be! Bennington asks us to consider that since “studies have been published on the pressure produced when penguins poop,” that our client’s reasonable sounding question can’t be new. There must be an answer somewhere and you should be able to find it, “You are the information professional after all, the expert searcher, the experienced librarian, the ultimate information broker. People come to you because Google couldn't cut it." He poses the question: can there be something “inherent in librarians and information professionals that drive us to keep hunting”? He doesn’t unequivocally answer his question in this piece.

So what are the signs and symptoms of RAD? Bennington offers the following:

• The Same Thing Over, and Over, and Over Again - Perhaps the most important sign that you need to stop is that you continue to find similar, but not completely relevant, resources, no matter what search terms or search strategy you deploy.

• The Question Is Questionable - Maybe the information requested is merely "fun" or "nice to have."

• The Client Wants to Stop – In the client’s mind he/she may have the answer, but you, the searcher, question that conclusion

• The Funding and/or Time Runs Out.

• The Wisdom of Crowds Says It's Time to Stop –“Sometimes, a clear indicator of when to say when is that you're all alone. You've bounced the question off your colleagues. You've consulted all the professional listservs to which you belong (and several that you don't). You've crowd-sourced the question via Twitter and LinkedIn. No one can suggest new terms, resources, or search strategies that you haven't already tried. Searching past this point makes you the information profession's equivalent of the alcoholic who hides a bottle of whiskey in the back of the toilet.”

• The Answer Exists … Kinda … But It'll Cost Ya' – The dreaded result: a one-page article that mentions your potential answer and it can only be found in an obscure journal only available for big bucks.

Bennington offers the following questions to help you self-identify RAD. If you can answer "yes" to any of these symptoms, you might have RAD:

* I have feelings of guilt and sadness at not finding the "right" information.

* I get depressed or feel ashamed of myself as a librarian when I have to tell the client a search came up dry.

* I think that someone must have written a white paper on even the most obscure topics.

* I think my colleagues are laughing at me when I can't find anything. They always find everything they're looking for.

* I can stop searching any time. But only after checking one … more … source …

* I try to hide my searching habits because I know my coworkers/ boss/spouse/friends wouldn't approve.

* My colleagues have gone to happy hour, and I'm still searching.

* The client has said it's OK to stop searching … but I think he's wrong.

Cure? According to Bennington, there is no cure for Reference Anxiety Disorder; however, he advises that one “manage the feelings and symptoms.” Here’s the Rx for RAD – attend CAHSLA and COCLS meetings – the ‘co-pay’ is nominal, and you will have limitless ‘refills.’

Lisa McCormick (The Jewish Hospital) is going to Israel with a group of health professionals from the hospital. Lisa has been part of the group at TJH working on establishing a sister hospital relationship with Sanz Medical Center-Laniado Hospital, Netanya, Israel. Laniado has a school of nursing, and Lisa will be meeting with the library staff at the school. There will be plenty of time to see the sights and savor the rich history of the country. Shalom!

Retirees

OK--here is what I have been/am up to: 1. Got up on the bike when the weather turned nice, and cracked a bone in my thumb. This interrupted my spring gardening efforts. 2. Then we started water aerobics at the Y, saw a lot of people who are worse off then we are physically, but STILL MOVING, so they are inspirations to us. 3. Then I got into the church library business, have bought lots of books, had a lot of fun, and convinced the clergy that we don't need to be supervised re buying, and have got a number of parishioners coming back to see what is happening. 4. Engaged in another bout of vigorous gardening, involving honeysuckle and trumpet vines, and sprained my wrist pretty badly. 5. Concurrently got involved with helping a good friend of ours move out of his apartment (having been there about 25 years.) and adjust to the new environment.

One of the things I have learned about retirement is that it gives you time to hurt yourself in a variety of ways. But we are having a really good time, although I miss seeing old friends, and some of the intellectual stimulation of working--did I really say that? Having control of my time is one of the best things. And when the traffic report comes on in the morning, I just smile. . . . Jane Thompson

I am back at the two schools where I volunteer; one morning in each, each week. Usually I am in the library and really enjoy the kids. I do much of the minor shelving, overdues, etc while the librarian reads or conducts a library-use lesson. Then I help one-on-one, locating books using the computer and re-enforcing book location according to the lesson the librarian has given. Sometimes I do one-on-one or small group tutoring - usually when the child/children have missed school.

My other library "work" is with the Friends of the local public library. We have a book sale, using donated books, and paying for additional programs at our branch. We have a very diverse international population and try to choose programs which appeal to their interests and help them learn about the marvelous American public libraries.

We still love to travel and in May visited Iceland for two days, then a tour in Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, finally a week in Paris at a B n' B on the Left Bank.

Between spending time with grandchildren, yoga classes, and water aerobics, I have managed to commit myself to putting together the Charlottesville Friends Meeting newsletter as well as the Chronicle, singing in the Charlottesville Women's Choir, singing with a group of shape note singers, and participating in two book clubs. I love having the time and energy to pursue my special interests, but there are just too many of them. I've managed to do some sewing and crafts but not nearly as much as I had anticipated. Our new, smaller house is great for us, but it still needs to be cleaned, and the outside needs a lot more landscaping work than I had in mind, so I have no trouble at all filling my time. I haven't gotten into any library work here in Virginia yet, but I'm intrigued by a local program called Books Behind Bars that manages a kind of lending library by mail for prisoners. -- Barbarie Hill

The Librarian’s Book of Lists by George M. Eberhart, Senior Editor at American Libraries, was released in paperback in May 2010 (list price $22). According to Eberhart “At some point in my life, I realized that making lists belongs on my list of top 10 favorite things to do and that’s how I came up with the idea for The Librarian’s Book of Lists.” The book is a collection of “humorous, serious, and sometimes bizarre” lists that Eberhart hopes will be “at least tangentially useful and informative, especially for librarians and book-lovers.” The following examples are provided to merely whet your appetite for further reading.

Library Volunteers by Randy Cohen

[Question] Community members have responded to our town's tight budget by volunteering at the library, so much so that the library laid off several long-term full-time employees, people who are our friends and neighbors. Having fewer municipal employees means a slight reduction in property taxes for everyone, but it harms those left jobless. Should town residents consider that before volunteering?

[Answer] Consider it? Certainly. I'm pro-thought. But not even those unfortunate and unintended consequences you cite should automatically forestall volunteers.

Many library jobs require trained professionals, work no mere civilian can do. But for those tasks an amateur can handle, go to it. There is no shortage of work to be done by skilled municipal employees: children to be educated, accident victims to be treated, stadiums to be erected that will ultimately bankrupt the town. (Maybe not this last.) All your community needs are the will and the funds to undertake such things. My optimistic view is that the money that library volunteers save will be applied to the infinite number of things to be done only by trained professionals or those workers who perform difficult or unpleasant jobs nobody will do without pay. And not just at the library. Ideally, volunteers are not eliminating a job but transferring it. The money saved by a volunteer who shelves books can pay a sanitation worker to help keep you and your neighbors healthy. I suspect that few of your fellow citizens are volunteering to work the garbage trucks, that demanding and essential task.

[Comment] There is a sad limitation to this analysis: a laid-off library employee is not apt to be hired to teach 11th-grade calculus. He or she will suffer; someone else will be hired. There are winners and losers here. And it would be unfortunate if this upsurge of civic virtue resulted in only a tiny reduction in some people's property taxes, an outcome that thwarts the noble motives of those volunteers: to promote civic betterment by reallocating limited resources.

I got a mention in the mahslin blog today: http://mahslin.wordpress.com/2010/07/27/the-wind-in-our-sails/ I was a speaker at their annual meeting. They’re medical librarians and they are currently feeling under siege from cost-cutting measures. “Why should we bother having librarians when we have the internet?” is the corporate logic. It’s logic I would have pursued, too, before meeting them in person.

Librarians are information scientists. While doctors may do a little to keep up with current research, they’re primarily educated by pharma companies with a vested interest in presenting research and information that encourages doctors to prescribe drugs. While their intentions are no doubt good, there’s so much research about how unconscious bias controls our behavior that I just don’t believe the pharma reps are presenting unbiased health information to the doctors.

The librarians, however, are trained to seek out the latest information and understand the quality of that information. While doctors are busy seeing patients, librarians are busy learning the latest. In-hospital librarians then serve as a resource to medical teams to make sure they are aware of the latest and best information about treatments and research right when they need it.

Next time you’re in need of emergency medical care, make sure you have a competent, skillful doctor, nurse, EMT, or nurse practitioner helping you out. And so they can do their job better, ask for your medical librarian to lend their expertise.

Librarians know stuff. You know how the words "geek" and "nerd" have gone from actual insults to words used to lovingly describe enthusiasts? Well, if we haven't gotten past venerating people who don't know anything, we've certainly reduced, I'd argue, the degree to which we stigmatize people for knowing a lot. This alone might not make libraries cool, but it takes away from the sense that they're actively not cool...

Libraries are green and local... You can pretty easily position a library as environmentally friendly (your accumulation of books and magazines you are not reading is fewer trees for the rest of us, you know), not to mention economical (obvious) and part of your local culture.

Libraries will give you things for free...

There seems to be a preposterous level of goodwill..."

It is done, my year as president. It went by fast. Congratulations to our newly elected officers. Regina Hartmann returns to the role of President. Emily Kean steps into the role of Vice President and Program Chair. I am excited to visit all the great places Emily and the program committee will take us next year. It could be your library if you let Emily know. Cathy Constance stays on as our faithful treasure. Brigid Almaguer will be the new secretary. Lisa McCormick will remain Editor of the Chronicle and Jane Thompson will remain as our archivist. I look forward to my new role for CAHSLA as webmaster. I recently read an interesting book called Seeking the cure: A history of medicine in America by Ira Rutkow. It is a great read and really demonstrates what a great role America has played in Medicine. Most of our accomplishments have come in the late nineteenth century and twentieth century. Before that our medicine was very much behind the times. But it was interesting to read about the creation of the AMA and the role it played in government decisions in an attempt to keep the doctor patient relationship between the doctor and patient. This is still an issue today though the discussion is now about keeping insurance companies out of the decision making process. I recommend this book for some summer reading. I would love to hear what you are reading.

Thank you to CAHSLA for this opportunity to serve as the president (Truly the easiest job of all the officers). I have learned much this year. And I have really enjoyed working with the other officers and getting to know them better. Enjoy the rest of the summer and I look forward to meeting you at next year’s CAHSLA membership meeting.

CAHSLA Has Gone to the Dogs!

Yes, you are reading this correctly. Our festive end-of-the-year picnic was made even more fun with our special guests – a few of the furry and four-legged variety.

Our program committee selected the Daniel Drake Park as the site of this year’s picnic on June 14. The park is named after one of Ohio’s leading physicians and the founder of Cincinnati’s first medical college, Dr. Drake who was also “a student of the natural sciences and a great observer of southern Ohio's flora and fauna.”

As usual, it was a great time to relax and connect with Colleagues, get caught up on changes in our libraries, and enjoy a delightful meal. We had several guests: Michael Thompson, husband of Jane Thompson; Martin, husband of Amy Koshoffer and their daughters Isabella and Vianne; and Gabrielle Hopkins, daughter of Regina Hartman. There was time to look at all of the charming children’s books members brought as a gift for Meredith and her daughter Marilyn Grace. Rocky, Meredith’s Cairn terrier, even got his own little storybook!

President Amy Koshoffer led a brief business meeting. She announced the results of the election. Amy presented the executive committee with a thank you gift of beeswax candles made by an artist in Winton Place. Past President Val Purvis presented Amy with a thank you gift from CAHSLA for her effective and inspiring leadership. We were acutely aware that one of our officers was not with us for our gathering. Meredith Orlowski, Program Chair, had arranged the end-of-the-year picnic. She was celebrating with us in spirit in her new home in Philadelphia.

And now to the furry friends. Albus and Elton are standard poodles and brothers who were adopted by two of our members. Albus was adopted by Val Purvis and Elton by Emily Kean. Lisa McCormick brought her mini-poodles, Latte and Sophie. We were very impressed with the training Albus has received from Val. Vianne, Isabella and Gabrielle took charge of Latte and Sophie making sure they received a great deal of exercise and attention. The combination of poodles and children resulted in many humorous events – I know I’ll never forget the site of Latte and Sophie having their first experience on a slide!

Unfortunately, the evening didn’t end on such a high note. Emily and Cecil Rae experienced some car trouble, which delayed their departure. All in all, we ended another successful CAHSLA year with a fun gathering of members and guests in a lovely and natural setting. Thanks to all the members of the Program Committee for this delightful picnic.

MLA – "Reflect & Connect"

There was magic in the air as the Medical Library Association returned to Washington, DC for the annual meeting May 22 – 27 for its 100th annual meeting. The conference site was the familiar Washington Hilton on Connecticut Avenue. You could easily get plenty of exercise by walking Connecticut Avenue down to DuPont Circle, and at the same time, choose from the vast array of ethnically diverse restaurants.

One thing I noticed immediately was that our usual bag of conference materials we are handed at the registration desk was light on paper. MLA and exhibitors opted to forego mass distribution of the glossy ads that weighed down our bags in past years. We were handed an EcosSmart bag that contained an interesting piece of paper announcing the MLA Green Project. The MLA Green Project is a one-time award that will recognize an institution/library, chapter or section that has creatively reduced environmental damage through special projects or ongoing innovations, advocacy, leadership or services.

As Connie Schardt, President of MLA, explained in her remarks, the theme of the conference was Reflect and Connect. The conference would offer multiple opportunities to acquire new information and then connect with colleagues to reflect on the impact or potential of the ideas. Connie also reminded us how much our profession has changed, especially due to social media. Connie incorporated an interactive audience response system into her presentation which those in the audience accessed with their smart phones. Connie reminded us of our colleagues who would be participating in the e-conference of the MLA meeting – another way MLA is connecting with the membership in response to our changing economic and institutional environments.

A highlight of the meeting was the induction of Ruth Holst as president. Ruth has been a longtime member of the Midwest Chapter and has held numerous leadership roles in the chapter and national MLA, and she began her career as a hospital librarian. In her Inaugural Address Ruth talked a great deal about research. Something we all struggle with and know is crucial is our ability to communicate our value to our institutions. To do this we must “show them the evidence” of our value. Of course the challenge we face is that our profession lacks evidence. Ruth's retort: create the evidence. She suggested beginning by asking the question: “What would give you the answers you need in your workplace?” According to Holst, building this body of evidence is the major task facing our profession.

As far as the 'magic' in the air – it wasn't so much enchantment ala Disneyland but of the Magic Johnson variety. Unbeknownst to MLA when they booked the Hilton for the conference, the new owners of the hotel embarked on a major renovation. When we arrived at the hotel, the most obvious example of the renovation was the patio – it was a huge pile of dirt. In the four days we were there, we saw the dirt replaced by flagstone pavers, walls with fountains, landscaping with fire pits, and finally the patio furniture artfully arranged. All of this was accomplished with work going on 24/7 – seeing the transformation was just like watching one of the television renovation shows when they do the speeded up version of all of the work that had been done for the "final reveal." Why the big push? Well, Magic Johnson was coming to inspect and do the ribbon cutting on May 26. We soon learned that Mr. Johnson is one of the owners of the hotel. As we were leaving the hotel for the airport, they were getting ready to put down the red carpet for him!

As I reflect back on the meeting, it is the interactions with colleagues and vendors that have the most impact of all on my overall meeting experience. This year, MLA provided all of the opportunities necessary for learning, connecting and reflecting.

MLA 2010 The McGovern Lecture

Author Daniel H. Pink delivered the annual John P. McGovern Award Lecturer on May 23rd at the meeting of the Medical Library Association. Pink was chosen because of his bestselling books and writings, most recently, A Whole New Mind: Why Right Brainers will Rule the Future. He has an interesting and varied background, including a stint as a speech writer for Vice President Al Gore. In an entertaining style Pink describes key right-brained activities that will spell the difference between success and failure in the 21st century global business environment. He shapes his message around six abilities: Design, Story, Symphony, Empathy, Play, and Meaning. Our success – and he includes personal fulfillment as well as monetary rewards – are directly tied to our abilities to be creative and to make meaningful human connections. We have entered the conceptual age where creators and empathizers will be the leaders.

Pink began his presentation with some fascinating information and data about the human brain. He is very adept at ‘connecting the dots’ with great examples related to outsourcing and the ‘rise’ of the information age – providing great context for his points. Pink offers fact-based, relevant insights into the ways we need to change the educational system so that we can compete and thrive in the new world economy. His concepts derive from his observations of the education systems of India and China. Don’t think his style was dry or academic – he is extremely articulate and personable and uses story very effectively in his presentation. He made sure to save time for questions from the audience. After his lecture, Pink was available in the Hall of Exhibits to autograph his book.

MLA is continuing the 2010 meeting theme of “Reflect and Connect” by sponsoring the first ever MLA Book Club. Members are invited to read Pink’s book and then connect at a web event in July to discuss the actions you have taken as a result of the book and lecture. EBSCO Information Services was the sponsor of the McGovern Lecture.

In conclusion, much of what Pink has written about is known information, but he has the skill and vision to weave the pieces together in a way that conveys a sense of urgency that demands action.

Lloyd Library Announces New Online Exhibit

The Lloyd Library and Museum is pleased to announce its newest online exhibit “In Search of Birds at the Lloyd.” While the Lloyd is well-known for its remarkable collection of botanical and pharmaceutical resources, perhaps only a handful of people know that its collection also includes significant holdings on diverse biological subjects. This exhibit opens a window onto our vast resources of zoological materials with a spotlight on ornithology.

Birds have long captured our imagination. People have watched, studied, and documented bird life for centuries; and, a nice representation of this scholarship is at the Lloyd. Ancient zoological texts sit near 20th century ornithological journals. Works by John James Audubon complement those by William Bartram and Alexander Wilson. We also have books for children, books about local birds, and books dedicated to feathers, nests, eggs, and skeletons; visitors to this exhibit will see selections from each.

All of the works in this exhibit contain artwork of beautiful birds drawn by natural history illustrators throughout history, from the well-known Mark Catesby and Thomas Bewick to the anonymous work found in ornithological periodicals. In addition, this exhibit highlights two fascinating American birds, the Ivory-billed woodpecker and the Passenger pigeon, and features birds of prey, parrots, and water birds.

This hands-on introduction to consumer health information will cover the information-seeking behaviors of consumers, the basics of MedlinePlus.gov, DIRLINE, ClinicalTrials.gov and other reliable web pages such as those from professional medical associations and advocacy groups. It will cover sites devoted to pharmaceutical information for consumers, drug-interaction databases and herbal information.

Bundle of Joy

We extend our warmest wishes to Meredith (UC Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library) and Bob Orlowski as they welcome their beautiful baby daughter Marilyn Grace on May 12. The Orlowskis, with Rocky the Cairn terrier in tow, have moved to Philadelphia for Bob’s residency. CAHSLA will indeed miss Meredith, and we are so grateful for her many contributions to the organization during her four-year tenure in Cincinnati. At the end-of the year picnic, we collected storybooks for Meredith to read to Marilyn. One special book even showed up for Rocky! Here’s the newest addition to the Orlowski family.

many books.  It really touched my heart.  There is so much baby stuff out there, and most of it is unnecessary, but

open one up. (Rocky thanks you too! He won't be joining the library's summer book club any time soon, but his new

of people.  I will miss you all!

We are still unpacking...in fact, my house is a total disaster - I can't wait to get back to a "normal" life.  This
weekend Bob got lucky and has 3 days off, so he will finish painting, then we can finish unpacking and organizing.

Baby Marilyn is doing wonderful. She is quite the little time sucker.  My goal for next week is to teach her how to
open the fridge and use the microwave.

Edith Starbuck, UC Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library shares the following about her recent immersion in teaching evidence-based medicine:

To help prepare for increased evidence-based medicine teaching responsibilities in the fall, I attended the "How to Teach Evidence Based Clinical Practice" workshop at McMaster University, June 6 - June 11, 2010. McMaster is located in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. It was an intense week spent in the company of MDs, PhDs, Pharm Ds, and a few librarian participants. We worked in small groups and were encouraged to present something outside our comfort zones both in subject area and presentation style. Meredith attended this workshop last year and so I knew going in that it was better to present earlier in the week rather than later. Pressure builds as the week goes on to meet or exceed the quality of the previous presenters. So I scheduled myself to present on the second day and afterwards felt much more able to relax and concentrate on learning content and presentation techniques from the tutors and other participants. Overall, the experience was very valuable and I'm looking forward to using the new interactive teaching techniques that I learned with first year medical students and pharmacy students. So if any of you are looking for an opportunity to challenge yourself, meet some interesting people, and learn a lot about teaching evidence-based clinical practice, I recommend attending the "How to Teach Evidence Based Clinical Practice" workshop at McMaster University.

A Colleague from the Past

Some of you may remember our colleague Margret Lippert (now Branschofsky) when she was the librarian at Providence Hospital and then the UC Engineering Library. We ran into Margret at the Medical Library Association Conference. She is Director of Library Services & Information Technology at the Webster Library at Tufts University. She inquired about many of you. It was a pleasure to see Margret after all of this time and to meet her husband.

OHSLA Spring Meeting

Lisa McCormick (The Jewish Hospital) attended the spring meeting and continuing education presentations in Columbus on April 19 at Mt Carmel College of Library Health Sciences Library hosted by at the Stevo Roksandic and staff. Holly Ann Burt from the GMR office presented “PubMed Searching for Experts” in the morning and Max Anderson presented “Geeks Bearing LITE Gifts” in the afternoon. The meeting was very well attended. Life in Virginia

Retirement to Virginia has not allowed Barbarie Hill (retired CCHM E L Pratt Library) and husband Tom to escape the weather roller-coaster they knew while living in the Queen City. Their first winter was a “snow Apocalypse” with nearly 55-inches of snow for central Virginia – close to the all-time record. Now Barbarie reports they jumped right into a hot and humid summer at the end of March. The weather is a great reason to stay cool indoors with an interesting book (she recommends Stieg Larsson's series of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" etc. books -- or, non-stop viewing of the World Cup matches.

Congratulations to Emily Kean who earned a Masters of Science in Library Science from the University of Kentucky. Emily, library assistant at The Christ Hospital James N. Gamble Library, is president- elect of CAHSLA. Emily has served in many key positions in CAHSLA, and we look forward to her continued contributions to the Association.

R. Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions shared the following
great news:
The University of Cincinnati Libraries have received a $314,258 grant from the
National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to digitize the correspondence and
photographs of Albert B. Sabin, developer of the oral polio vaccine and distinguished
service professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Children's
Hospital Research Foundation from 1939-1969. The correspondence and photographs are
part of the Hauck  Center for the Albert B. Sabin Archives. They reside in the Henry 
R.  Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions where they have been
organized and preserved with the support of the John Hauck Foundation. The digitizing
of the correspondence and photographs will begin in July 2010 for completion in June
2013. The digitized documents and images will be freely available on the Web. In
addition, a finding aid will be available to assist users in locating items within
the collection.

Brigid Almaguer of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College sent the following:

We have a new part-time Archives Assistant named Natalie Draper whose duties include processing, indexing and digitization of archives materials as well as creating an archives website and Facebook presence. In addition, one of our adjunct reference librarians is moving to Michigan and we have rehired a reference librarian who worked in the library about 10 years ago and has just moved back from Washington DC named Rose Labarge. Also, I am in my second year of conducting a monthly book club for Cincinnati State staff and faculty. Our last selection, The Housekeeper and the Professor, was by a Japanese author very popular in Japan named Yoko Ogama.

I attended our resident graduation dinner this year and as I was sitting in the audience... one of our most respected physicians got up to speak. He started talked about a person that started here at Hamot over 30 years ago with him. He went on to say what a wonderful support person she is and that his residents have truly gained the knowledge they needed to go on with their careers and never could have done it without this person.

He went on to say some more wonderful things and then he asked everyone to please stand and thank her... then he introduced me. I was completely overwhelmed and did not expect this much praise and gratitude and I do have to say that I did shed a few tears and have never received so many hugs in one night. It felt so good to be appreciated by so many in one night that it truly made me proud of my 32 years here at Hamot.

I have to share this one, because it has always made me smile:

As a new Librarian when I started working here in Miami in 2008 I was always talking up our profession to everyone I met. I hadn't realized how much I advertised what I did until a few months later. I started dating a man, and on our third date after we had parted ways I received a phone call from him at 2 a.m. He was calling with a medical librarian emergency.

His little sister was in pharmacy school and was writing a paper and needed reference help. It was 2 a.m., on a Sunday morning and she knew she wouldn't be able to get the reference help she needed until her university library opened the next day. She called her brother crying, and he volunteered he'd just left a medical librarian and he couldn't guarantee anything but he would call me and see if I could help her out. Needless to say, I helped her with her search and the date turned into a relationship. Yesterday I received a text message from his sister, "I just met with a cool librarian here at school about my research project!"

Subject: story about Librarians

This is just a little story about the impact of librarians on

people...even doctors. About six weeks ago through a series of mishaps,

I ruptured my left arm distal bicep. I decided to have the surgery and

went to a local orthopedic surgeon. He went to an excellent medical

school and followed up in excellent facilities for his internship and

residencies. He is young - 40'ish - but they are all young these days to

me. During my initial visits he went out of his way to treat me with

such deference, continually mentioning to the staff that I was the

librarian at the hospital. I began to wonder if he was all that serious

- it began to embarrass me.


I went back for my six week check up today and again he was so effusive.

He then told me that his very favorite teacher in third and fourth grade

was his librarian. He began to recite books that he had read - by Daniel

Pinkwater, among others - he even looked some of them up on the

computer while I was sitting there. Now I got the picture... he was

truly touched by his librarian and was showing me that same care and

generosity.

This made my day for once upon a time when my children were growing up

and attending grammar school, I too was a school librarian and I too

read Daniel Pinkwater to my third and fourth grade classes. (My favorite

was "Fat Men From Space") I told him that I actually wrote to Mr.

Pinkwater and he wrote back with a drawing of himself on the letter. I

am sure this was due to having two boys.

I came back to the office with a warm glow which has sustained itself

all afternoon. I hope you all feel that way too.
