Thank you to everyone who attended our first ever virtual Membership Meeting. Even though we were not able to meet in person due to the ongoing global pandemic, I still felt like I connected with my CAHSLA colleagues. A big reason for this feeling was the hilarious game that we played per Amy Koshoffer’s suggestion; but, in all seriousness, the meeting demonstrated to me how adaptable my CAHSLA network is to changing work environments.
As a first-time CAHSLA President, I am grateful to work with a very talented Executive Committee: Amy Koshoffer, Vice President/President-Elect; Emily Kean, Treasurer; and Lisa McCormick, Secretary. Thank you for the continued service of our Chronicle editors, Lisa McCormick and Barbarie Hill. Much thanks to Amy Koshoffer and Emily Kean for serving on the Technology Committee.
If you have any suggestions for 2020/2021 virtual events, please contact Amy Koshoffer and/or consider serving on the Program Committee.
To encourage CAHSLA membership and to say thank you for your support, CAHSLA members will receive a Spring Grove Cemetery tour of notable health sciences locations by Emily Kean. So cool!
Let’s continue to share our knowledge, ideas, and connect.

Annual Executive Committee Transition Meeting
Date: August 4, 2020
Time: 1:30 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.
Present: Pettigrew, Jennifer; Kean, Emily; Yurkowski, Cara; McCormick, Lisa
The annual executive committee held a virtual transition meeting. The first order of business discussed was the format for the meetings for the upcoming association year. All agreed that, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, meetings will be online/virtual. Considering the unpredictability of the pandemic, all agreed that we would approach the year meeting by meeting. Emily offered to co-ordinate the planning of the kick-off meeting with Amy Koshoffer.
As a membership renewal incentive, Emily has an idea for a virtual tour of notable health sciences locations at Spring Grove Cemetery. Members who wish to pay Emily with a check will have to mail it to her home as she is not on campus. PayPal is an option for membership renewal.
Cara and Emily will work together for the transition of banking information.
Respectfully submitted,
Lisa McCormick, Secretary
Annual Membership Year Kick-off Meeting
Date: September 15 2020
Time: 5:30 p.m. – 6:50 p.m.
Present: Pettigrew, Jennifer; Koshoffer, Amy; Kean, Emily; Yurkowski, Cara; Hill, Barbarie; Purtee, Sharon; Herrlein, Alex; Hartman, Regina; Slavinski, Barbara; Carrigan, Kelly; Starbuck, Edith.
President Jennifer Pettigrew welcomed everyone to the first ever virtual annual membership kick-off meeting for the 2020-2021 association year. Jennifer reminded us that we are charting new waters, and we will be using technology to connect our members. Officers were then introduced: Amy Koshoffer, Vice-President/President Elect; Emily Kean, Treasurer/Membership Chair; Lisa McCormick, Secretary; Emily Kean and Amy Koshoffer, Technology Committee; Barbarie Hill and Lisa McCormick, CAHSLA Chronicle Co-Editors.
Emily described a unique membership renewal incentive. To those renewing their membership, they will receive a unique access link to enjoy a virtual tour of notable health sciences locations at the Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum (SPC&A). The cemetery is the third largest cemetery in the United States. [Daniel Drake, MD, founder of the Medical College of Ohio, forerunner to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, is buried at SPC&A]
Jennifer then invited people to share how COVID-19 has effected the provision of library services at their home institution. Most everyone described a hybrid model of staffing and service delivery. Some are enjoying their work from home option very much.
Amy led the group in a game, Two Truths and a Lie. It was an ice breaker activity uncovering some un-imaginable facts about CAHSLA members.
Regina gave us an up-date on our former colleague Jennifer Steinhardt who is now living in Chicago with her husband. They are doing well and are expecting their first child.
Respectfully submitted,
Lisa McCormick, Secretary
Condolences
We extend our sympathy to lifetime member Mary Piper (retired, UC HSL) on the death of her husband Peter Stambrook, PhD, former chair of the Department of Cancer and Cell Biology, University of Cincinnati. Peter died on October 1, 2020.
Welcome
Kelly Carrigan is the Assistant Librarian at the Cincinnati campus of the Galen College of Nursing.

Alison Flood recently interviewed Edward Brooke-Hitchings for the article, From cut-out confessions to cheese pages: browse the world's strangest books published on the Guardian website. Brooke-Hitchings “grew up in a rare books shop with a rare book dealer for a father” and is an author of books on the histories of maps. Ten years ago he came up with the idea to collect the most eccentric ‘books’ in the world. The Madman's Library: The Greatest Curiosities of Literature [Simon & Schuster,] is Brooke-Hitchings catalog of his collected works. Madman’s is a “book on books” describing these extraordinary works and the stories of their creation. Flood’s article highlights some of these unusual books and includes some wonderful photographs, including the ‘book’ created from 20 slices of Kraft American Cheese. The University of Michigan, according to Flood, has a ‘copy’ of 20 Slices of Cheese which is “remarkably shelf stable.”
This is an announcement from the OHSLA (Ohio Health Sciences Library Association) OHSLA Voice Newsletter about a free advanced PubMed searching webinar in November.
NNLM Training Development Specialist Rebecca Brown, MLS, AHIP, will present PubMed Tips for Expert Searchers, a live webinar covering advanced concepts for effective searching. The live course will be offered via WebEx on Friday, November 6 at 10am EST. It is worth two MLA CE credits and is intended for those with at least an intermediate knowledge of PubMed and MeSH. Because of 2020’s unusual circumstances, the Executive Committee opted to allow NNLM to host and teach the course. As a result, this CE class is a one-time special FREE, nationwide event. Course objectives include: locate and identify the available fields in the Advanced Search Builder, explain how to build a search using the Advanced Search Builder, and locate and use the MEDLINE Resources Guide to assist with field searching. Additional objectives are listed on the OHSLA Events page. Registration for the course is now open: http://ohsla.info/events. Please be aware that the registration link on the OHSLA Events page will take you to the NNLM registration site, and you must have an NNLM account to register for the course. If you do not have one, you can create one for free. Please feel free to publicize this CE course to other interested colleagues, but also let them know the value of an OHSLA membership and encourage them to join or renew. We rely on our regular membership and meeting fees to maintain vital member services, such as our website and online registration and payment options via Wild Apricot and PayPal.
Spend a Day with a Library Worker
The Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library is doing a series of profiles on the many different types of workers needed to operate a large public library system. From the introduction, “When people hear the word “library” a few things typically come to mind, namely librarians and books. But a library is run by people working in many different roles. They’re all helping community members with much more than book recommendations. Our series Spend a Day with a Library Worker takes you inside the lives of our library staff in different roles and follows them on a typical workday.”
